Dr. Shook first became interested in psychology and psychiatry in the Seventh Grade when he read The Crime of Punishment by Dr. Karl Menninger. Thus, he was thrilled that his first internship, for his Masters Degree, was at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, California, is a male psychiatric prison.

While training and working in California, Dr. Shook’s theoretical and treatment focus was on Jungian therapy, Object Relations, Gestalt and Ericksonian, Existentialism, meditation techniques, Sullivanian, Rogerian Therapy and Neurolinguistic Programming therapy.

His first choice for training university sites for his Doctorate was Georgia State University because he they had a superior Jungian oriented professor. Ray A. Craddick, Ph.D. Dr. Shook considers one of his greatest honors was studying with Dr. Craddick. He also chose GSU because they had an Existential professor, an Object Relations professor, and professors who had studied Gestalt Psychotherapy with Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Psychotherapy.

Dr. Shook’s first choice for his residence was the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center because they had a psychologist who was a Pain Management Specialist, Dr. Joe Dane, who used hypnosis and Dr. Shook had studied Ericksonian Hypnosis for years. It should be noted that Dr. Dane preferred more direct methods of hypnosis rather than Ericksonian methods.

Dr. Shook also chose UVA because they had a famous dream expert there, Dr. Robert Van de Castle. Dr. Shook did his doctoral dissertation on dream interpretation. Dr. Shook’s dissertation used the phenomenological method and a phenomenologist, Dr. Maurice Apprey was also at UVA. Last but far from least, Dr. Shook chose UVA for their excellent program in Child Psychiatry.

Today, Dr. Shook’s major theoretical and treatment orientations are most influenced by the following perspectives: Jungian, Object Relations, Existential, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Behavior Analysis, Ericksonian, Bowenian Family Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy Sullivanian, EMDR, Rogerian, Mindfulness Meditation and the Nonviolent Communication System created by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg.

Prior to going to UVA, Dr. Shook spent several years as a psychotherapist at an adolescent psychiatric hospital and resident placement center.

Dr. Shook has extensive and in-depth experience treating many problems but a few include: Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Personality Disorders, ADHD, Adjustment Disorders, PTSD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Panic Disorder, Marital Problems, Family Problems and Chronic Pain.
